Back in the day, Edgar Wright’s Spaced was my jam. I remember someone loaning me a bootleg DVD and feeling like I’d discovered the holy grail. I watched it endlessly and subjected everyone who knew me to frequent post-night-out viewings. A few days ago, I randomly popped it on and watched the entire first season.

Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Jessica Stevenson (now Jessica Hynes), Mark Heap, Katy Carmichael, and Julia Deakin. They’re all just perfect. This club scene is one of my favorite segments because it really captures everything I love about these characters, this show, and how it felt to go out for the night in my 20s.

Any other Spaced fans out there? Who’s your favorite character? What’s your favorite episode?

  1. I’m always amazed to see British comedies landing in the US as our humour has often gone over the heads of American audiences, or the idea is remade and reworked to suit US tastes. Spaced is among those I would never in a million years had thought would air over there let alone get an audience.

    1. That’s pretty understandable. I would say that anyone who grew up with PBS in their house is familiar with British comedies. Growing up this is where we had access to shows like Fawlty Towers, Keeping Up Appearances, etc. Spaced is one I don’t remember airing anywhere except maybe online or rented on DVD. Of course, I’d say that Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have a pretty good following in the US these days among certain generations. I’m Gen X so any older or younger and there might be a lack of awareness.

      1. Keeping Up Appearances? Wow. If there was ever a comedy that was quintessentially British and hard to translate overseas, it would be among the top choices.

I know the US tried three times to remake Fawlty Towers, on one occasion removing the Basil character (the whole point of the show) and in another combining Basil and Sybil into one character!

If it’s any consolation, we Brits tried to remake US comedies with no success – notably The Golden Girls (Brighton Belles), a show called That 70’s Show (Days Like These – cancelled after six of 13 episodes aired) and Married…With Children (Married For Life), the latter I don’t remember past the pilot but apparently ran for seven episodes.

The only success was The Upper Hand which was remake of a show called Who’s The Boss (which I don’t think aired over here) lasting seven series, yet I doubt many people will remember it today.

      2. Really? I mean at its core, Keeping Up Appearance is about as universal as it gets. That mask that neighbors can wear. Ritual and expectation. Love that series. I had no idea that Fawtly had any remakes! That’s crazy. I think the only remake over here that was successful was The Office. The BBC original is a classic. The first season of the US version is rough. They didn’t know how to translate the humor. By the second season they’d figured it out though.

      3. I don’t know ho much you know about The Golden Girls but interestingly, one of the Fawlty Towers remakes starred Betty White and the other starred Bea Arthur! Only Betty’s made to a series for 10 episoses, whilst Bea’s never made it past the pilot stage.

The Office has been remade by just about every territory I think, from US, to Australia to Greece and beyond! I may be biased but the UK original is genius , I never got into the US one.

I know the US also tried to remake Coupling, Men Behaving Badly and The IT Crowd to little success. I also recall an 80’s UK sitcom Dear John getting the US treatment. The BBC screened some episodes and it just missed every mark of the original. :-/
