The other day I ran across this fascinating stop-motion animation video on YouTube entitled Mrs. Apple’s Recipe – Strawberry Cake by a channel called @milin.woolfelt. The short film features a little mouse called Mrs. Apple who prepares ingredients in her country kitchen to bake a strawberry cake.
It’s cozy, peaceful, and overflowing with charm. This particular style of animation is what the artist is referring to as “wool felting,” as they use wool felt for everything. The characters. The set. The props. It’s a truly unique experience that has real magic in it.
I’ve been a fan of stop-motion animation ever since I was exposed to the work of the legendary Ray Harryhausen. Jason and the Argonauts. Clash of the Titans. Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger.
Some of my earliest and best memories are of watching weekend movies on TV with my Dad – stop-motion sword-fighting skeletons and clockwork owls brought to life by the legendary Ray Harryhausen. The world was a better place for it.
Handmade animation like this has a texture and presence that computer generated animation just doesn’t have. I’m grateful that artists like this are still out there creating and and find new audiences. I would love to see a wool felt feature film.
