Check out the trailer for the new Apple TV series Small Prophets (2026). Directed by Mackenzie Crook, this gentle, whimsical British comedy-drama looks to have a similar feel to his previous series Detectorists.

The premise: Pearce Quigley plays Michael Sleep, a man whose life stalled when his partner Clea vanished seven years earlier. He splits his days between a DIY shop and visits to his father Brian (Michael Palin) in a care home. Brian produces an alchemical recipe from an old journal, and Michael uses it to grow homunculi, tiny prophesying spirits he hopes can tell him what happened to Clea.

This one has a few good things going for it. If you’re a fan of Mackenzie Crook’s Detectorists, it looks to have a similar look and feel, which is encouraging. Then you have Michael Palin. Wow. It just feels good to see him show up in anything. And finally the little creatures look to be stop-motion rather than CGI, which is also a good indication that the makers are headed in the right direction.

Definitely going to give this one a watch. Small Prophets premieres on Apple TV on October 7, 2026.

  1. This is a fun little series, although it makes laugh they call it “gentle” with the amount of cursing in it (bit like Detectorists). I guess they mean it isn’t mean spirited or angry. Warning, series one ends on a cliffhanger so… 😮

    1. Haha good point! I think that’s what it means. And good to know. I hope that means there will be a season 2.

      1. I’m surprised a show like this or Detectorist would work in the US as they are subtle and often full of pathos, whilst US comedies are a gag a minute and rarley funny. 😉

      2. I agree. I grew up on network US comedies, but since the internet opened up the world of options, I can’t think of a US comedy series I’ve watched on a regular basis. I watch literally nothing on the main networks. There are some good ones out there though. Only Murders In The Building and The Chair Company come to mind.

      3. I don’t know those shows – if they do air over here it is on a platform I don’t have, which is most of them! 😛

      4. The Chair Company is HBO MAX and Only Murders is Hulu/Disney. Both very different brands of humor, but both really great. What are some of your favorite recent comedies?

      5. None from the US, unless you count Family Guy, American Dad and The Simpsons but they are holdovers from yesteryear.

      7. Ah, I do apologise.

Off the top of my head (and I’ll stick to BBC shows since they seem to travel oveseas) I’d say:

        Motherland
        Amandaland
        Mandy
        Ann Droid
        Austin
        Can You Keep A Secret?
Ludwig (more a police drama with some light comedy in it)
        Mammoth
        🙂

      8. This is great. I only Ann Droid off this list, so I’ll have to check these others out. Thanks!
