What a week! First we get the new trailer for Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus Zero and now here we have the eagerly awaited trailer for Ryusuke Hamaguchi‘s new film, All of a Sudden, starring Virginie Efira and Tao Okamoto.

Loosely inspired by When Life Suddenly Takes a Turn: Twenty Letters Between a Philosopher with Terminal Cancer and a Medical Anthropologist, a collection of real-life letters by Makiko Miyano and Maho Isono, All of a Sudden is the story of a French woman transformed by her encounter with a terminally ill Japanese playwright she meets while working at a nursing home. Together, they turn the facility into a symbol of resistance and humanity against the limits of the system. Check out the first full trailer below.

I think Ryusuke Hamaguchi is one of the most consistently interesting directors working today. A modern master, really. I love his films Drive My Car, Evil Doesn’t Exist, and Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy, just to name a few. They’re always challenging and deeply moving to me.
