Cinematic Point Of View

I’m a big fan of vintage book cover art and, from time to time, I can’t help but pick up a book due to that artwork. Many of these books I’ve yet to read and have often never heard of. Case in point, this book.

Red Flame Burning by by Ward Hawkins published in 1985 by Ballentine Books. with cover art by legendary Ralph McQuarrie. I mean, come on! Future city? Lizard man walking a beetle? How can you resist this? In case you happen to be unfamiliar with Ralph McQuarrie he is probably best known for his Star Wars concept art.

The story follows an aging alcoholic named Harry Borg, whose life transforms when a mysterious reptilian humanoid named Guss enters his apartment through a hole in an invisible wall. Guss rejuvenates Harry and transports him to the lizard-people’s world to aid in an ancient war, only for Harry to realize these alien allies may view humanity as food rather than heroes.

I look forward to sitting down with this pulp sci-fi buddy-adventure and giving it a read sometime soon.
