A beautiful, rural Japanese setting. Long, shadowy hallways. Fall weather. A creepy painting. Check out the trailer for Never After Dark (2026). This one has all the hallmarks of a cozy, classic horror movie that I’ll love.
Never After Dark stars Moeka Hoshi (Shōgun) as a wandering medium who guides restless spirits out of the world of the living. Summoned to an isolated country house, she confronts a disturbing apparition with powers well beyond her experience.
In looking into this film, I found it interesting that the director is an American named Dave Boyle. Apparently, he studied Japanese at Brigham Young University and served as a Mormon missionary before breaking into filmmaking. He’s primarily known for cross-cultural comedies, such as Big Dreams Little Tokyo (2006) and White on Rice (2009), and most recently the Netflix hit House of Ninjas (2024), so Never After Dark seems to be a bit of a departure for him. I’m intrigued to say the least.
Looks like Magnolia Pictures is releasing in US theaters on September 25, 2026.
