What is about Willem Dafoe and his uncanny ability to create instantly interesting characters? Check him out in the trailer for director Gastón Solnicki’s new dark comedy The Souffleur (2025).
Dafoe plays a career manager at a hotel, in Vienna, who is waging a war against the developer who bought the building out from under him. As his paranoia starts to grow, everything around him starts to unravel. This life of hospitality he’s built is seemingly slipping away, perhaps along with his sanity.
Ir looks like The Souffleur premiered at Venice in 2025 and is finally getting a release on digital through Kino Lorber for North American distribution. I could not find an actual release date, but since the trailer went up a few weeks ago I would imagine it’s soon.
The passing of time. Change. Dafoe is at his best when playing someone who’s quietly losing control. Really looking forward to this one.
