I ran across the Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters 40th Anniversary Kickstarter the other day, and the timing couldn’t be better. I’ve been finding a lot of enjoyment in comics again, and this particular title holds some deep nostalgia for me.

If you’ve never heard of the Hamsters, back in the day when Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles took the comic book world by storm, there was a flood of what might be considered TMNT “knock-offs” or parodies. Of the many such titles to hit the shelves, Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters was my favorite.

The story begins in 1977, when NASA sends four hamsters into space to destroy a hovering, radioactive gelatinous mass, exposing them to a radioactive cloud. The hamsters mutate into super-smart, human-like creatures, as one does when exposed to space goo, and find their ship crash-landing near a monastery of Tibetan monks. Of course, these monks train them in martial arts, as monks often do, and the rest is history.

With original creator, Don Chin, guiding the way, this Kickstarter aims to gather the comics, specials, rare stories, and fan-favorite adventures spanning four decades into two huge omnibus volumes.

I have a ton of fond memories reading this series. I’m chipping in for volume one. Gotta do it. Get all the details about the Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters Kickstarter project at the link below.
