To say I’m excited about seeing this movie would be the understatement of the year. If you have yet to see the trailer for director Na Hong-jin’s (The Wailing) long-awaited new film ‘Hope’ you gotta check it out below.
The film takes place in a remote harbor village where a police chief named Bum-seok and his officer Sung-ae are trying to protect a community of elderly residents from an unknown threat. Meanwhile, a group of locals who headed into the mountains to hunt down a mysterious creature end up becoming the hunted themselves. What starts as a simple case of small-town ignorance slowly spirals into something much bigger.
Aliens aside, there is a lot about this trailer that reminds me of his previous film ‘The Wailing’ (2016) which ranks at the top of my list for films that left a mark. I’ve only ever watched it once because that ending just shook me. I loved it though. Might be time for a long overdue re-watch.
The film stars Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, Hoyeon, Michael Fassbender, and Alicia Vikander. I’ve read it also has one of the biggest budgets of any Korean film at around $50 million. Sure looks it.
I know this film just premiered at Cannes yesterday, but I can’t wait to see it!
