What if trees were watching us like we watch them? That’s the central idea behind the new film Silent Friend (2025) by director Ildikó Enyedi. Check out the mesmerizing official trailer.
The film centers on a ginkgo tree, standing quietly across the decades as it watches human lives unfold around it.
In 1908, the university’s first female student, played by Luna Wedler, discovers hidden cosmic patterns through photography. In 1972, a young student, played by Enzo Brumm, experiences a life changing personal transformation through a simple connection with a plant. In 2020, a neuroscientist, played by Tony Leung Chiu-wai, conducts experiments with the tree during the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This one wasn’t on my radar. Don’t know the director but having a quick look at her previous work I’m about to jump down that rabbit hole. Hope this one gets a theatrical run in my area.
