I’ve always had a soft spot for the Phantasm series, specifically the first two films. They capture that renegade, indie horror spirit of late 70s/early 80s so well. Reggie Bannister and his declining health have also been on my mind a lot recently. There is a GoFundMe page open to help support his move to hospice, if you care to donate.
Composed by Fred Myrow and Malcolm Seagrave, I think this Phantasm main theme sits up there among the other memorable, classic horror themes of the era. Eerie and dreamlike, it gently builds and sets the tone for the unexplainable, wild, ride that unfolds in Phantasm.
Where does the Phantasm soundtrack rank for you in terms of great horror movie themes?
On personal note, many years ago I had a short film playing in the New York City Horror Film Festival. Me and my producer flew to NY from Texas and stayed in a hostel to attend the event. After the screenings, we hung out a bar late into the night. While there, the “Tall Man” himself, Angus Scrimm, showed up and took pictures with us out front. He was the nicest guy you could ever imagine. It was one of the most memorable weekends of my life and cemented my love for Phantasm.
