There have a been a few movie trailers recently that left me feeling unexpectedly excited. This is one of them. Check out the trailer for the low-tech, Brazilian dystopian drama ‘The Blue Trail,’ directed by Gabriel Mascaro.

In a near-future Brazil, the government begins relocating older citizens to distant “senior colonies.” When 77-year-old Tereza is forced into the program after the age cutoff drops, she chooses to run instead. Traveling by boat through the Amazon, she sets out to chase a lifelong wish and meets people along the way who challenge what freedom and dignity mean under a system built to control her.

I love a good low-tech, science fiction movie. This one hits all the marks for me from subject matter, location, and casting to visual style and music. I’m not sure I’ve seen any of this director’s work, but I’m going to seek it out for sure.

The ‘The Blue Trail’ stars Denise Weinberg, Rosa Malagueta, Rodrigo Santoro, and Miriam Socarras and hits US theaters April 3, 2026.
