Happy 31st birthday Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla! You’ve always been one of my favorites!

Created from Godzilla cells that drifted into space and mutated (??), Godzilla must battle SpaceGodzilla, a sort of crystalline cosmic clone of himself, and rescue Little Godzilla with help from M.O.G.U.E.R.A.

Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla was released to theaters in Japan on December 10, 1994. Overall, it’s the 21st film in the Godzilla series and the sixth movie in the “Heisei” era.

There is a lot I love about this movie.

I love the SpaceGodzilla design. I love that Godzilla and M.O.G.U.E.R.A. fight together. I love the addition of “Little G” which helps makes this one sort of kid-friendly. It’s also got all that zany, “anything goes” Heisei energy I’ve grown to appreciate over the years.

Even with all the zaniness, the film still manages to conjure up some real emotions in the final act when Little G gets taken hostage.

Did you know that the film was almost called AstroGodzilla? Apparently the crystal idea came late in the game and in early drafts and concept art, by designer Shinji Nishikawa, SpaceGodzilla looked like some sort of cosmic armored knight.

Did you know that M.O.G.U.E.R.A. replaced MechGodzilla? Due to Toho rules about not making back-to-back MechGodzilla movies they decided to bring back M.O.G.U.E.R.A. instead!
