Have you ever used a field recorder? I picked one up earlier this year for some video production I was doing at work and they are a lot of fun. Pop on some headphones and walk around the woods. It’s incredible what you can hear.
In many ways that looks to be the primer for this upcoming film Rabbit Trap starring Dev Patel, Rosy McEwen, and Jade Croot. Married musicians move from London to Wales to work on a new album in a small country cottage when they accidently record some sort of mystical sound that starts to tear at the fabric of their reality. Check out the trailer.
Having just recently watched Hereditary, this story is giving me some of that Ari Aster vibe. Not a cult story, but a really unsettling feeling. It also reminds me of a campier film from a few years ago called Unwelcome, about a young couple moving to the countryside and running into fairytale creatures. Not a perfect film, but I quite liked that one too.
If I’ve learned anything from watching movies it’s never move to the country if you’re married. It can only lead to divorce or death. Maybe just go on holiday.
I love the idea of taking sound and vibration as using as the springboard for the story. There’s so much to grounded science to play with there. How noise affects your mental state. Pretty excited to see this one.
