Recently, I ran across the comics of Noah Van Sciver. I “blind bought” a couple of his mini-comics and really dug this charming, little 32 page, 5″ x 7″ comic book called “I Don’t Hate Your Guts.”

It’s a “slice of life” 30-day journal full of ordinary, and intimate, moments in the life of struggling artist Noah Van Sciver. Watching movies. Wasting time on the internet. Making art. Listening to stories by crazy co-workers at your day job. Drinking coffee. Going to bookstores. Going on a first date. Trying to sell your art. Questioning your life.
I found it incredibly relatable and engaging with lots of subtle humor and human moments on every page.

I also love the artwork. It feels spontaneous and human. Purposefully unpolished. The muted, earthy colors help give this world, and these characters, a feeling of warmth and life. It feels real. Like someone you know just handed it to you and said “Here, this was my last month. Read it and weep.” It’s such a brilliant way to capture little moments that matter to you.

Another thing. It’s hard to believe that a comic this short could have the power to successfully convey the feeling you get when you meet someone new, but it does. You know this isn’t the end of the story, but there is hope on these pages. That’s enough right there for me to recommend “I Don’t Hate Your Guts.”
I’m really looking forward to reading more from Noah. You can pick up “I Dont Hate Your Guts” on his website right here.
