We watched A Minecraft Movie a 2nd time this past weekend. We saw it opening weekend and it was one of the best opening day cinema experiences I’ve had with the family since Godzilla Minus One. While you can’t recapture that feeling on a second viewing, there is something about seeing this in the theater that elevates the material.
Also, I unironically “feel alive” when I listen to this Jack Black rock-anthem “I Feel Alive” from A Minecraft Movie soundtrack. I love the end scene where this plays. They know what they’re doing. This is the kinda music I grew up listening to in high school. Hair bands. Class of 91.
This song also hits a nerdy nostalgic sweet spot for me, just like the movie does.
It’s okay to be a fan of Akira Kurosawa’s Red Beard, Abbas Kiarostami’s Taste of Cherry, and Jared Hess‘s A Minecraft Movie, from my point of view.
END CREDITS SPOILER
At the first screening, there were more kids than adults. This time, we were surrounded by adults. As we sat there during the credits, and waited for the post credit scene, I looked over at some women getting up to leave and trying to convince their dates to stay as they were sure there would be something extra. They’re right.
When Alex opens the door, I heard them quietly squeal with delight. I looked over and you could see their eyes tearing up, smiles on their faces.
It made me tear up a little that the film gave these complete strangers that reaction. It’s just one of many reasons why I love movies.
The fun we had seeing the movie is the magic. It’s amazing that something as silly as A Minecraft Movie can bring so much unexpected joy into someone’s day.
It makes my nerdy Dad, gamer, film lover brain happy.
