I had heard so many good things Kiyotaka Oshiyama‘s new anime Look Back ever since the trailer came online. I missed my chance to see it in the theater here and was pretty excited when I saw it was on Amazon Prime this morning. So, I took my son to school, grabbed some coffee, and sat down to watch it before work.
I loved it! With a running time of only 58 minutes, it feels like a short film more than a movie and that’s perfectly okay. Refreshing actually.
It was just what I needed to feel inspired this week.

The story is about an overly confident 4th grader, named Fujino, and a classmate, who’s a bit of a shut-in, named Kyomoto that are drawn together through their shared love of drawing manga. To say much more for such a short film would be spoling. If you’re a creative type like myself though, you’ll definitely appreciate and relate to most of the feelings coming across in this touching story.
Based on the manga of the same name and written with Chainsaw Man creator Tatsuki Fujimoto, you might be able to guess that Look Back isn’t all rainbows and sunshine, so be prepared.
This movie feels like a secret love letter to life, full of art and emotion and the unknown.
Give it a watch!
