I just got back from watching the re-release of Godzilla Minus One for the 70th Anniversary of Godzilla. This was my 7th viewing in the theater since it’s initial release in 2023 and I’ve watched it twice at home. Would it still be as great as I remember?

Absolutely! In fact if I had to rank the experience (and I have to according to internet law) this viewing would rank up in the top 3 of my multiple Godzilla Minus One experiences.

I found myself getting emotional at different moments than I had before. Noticing little things like how the flying scenes near the end we’re giving me Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack feelings. When Godzilla is slowly making his way through the countryside, something about the way it was shot and the shade of the sky and trees (okay not perfect but whatever) really reminded me of how those miniature sets looked.

That particular moment has always felt really nostalgic to me and now I know why.

If they make a direct sequel I would be so happy to spend more time with any or all of these characters again. Yamazaki made 3 of his Always: Sunset on Third Street movies so why not a Godzilla trilogy?

For this special re-release, before the movie began, there was a short VFX promo piece showing how they did certain shots. You’ve likely seen it online.

After the credits though there was a nice QA with the director and head VFX partner that really wrapped up the experience perfectly. Nothing earth shattering but I loved the candidness of it and the story about meeting Spielberg.

Thank you TOHO for putting this film back out at the perfect time. I needed this distraction today. Long live the King.
