So I’ve been watching all of Akira Kurosawa‘s films the past month. So many I had not seen. I’m about half way through one of the last films he ever made called Rhapsody in August. It’s a simple story that deals with three generations coming to terms with the bombing of Nagasaki. It’s a really interesting film and it even has Richard Gere in it! Who knew?! I sure didn’t.
Anyway, I’m sitting there and there are 4 children that are the main characters. The older boy sure looked familiar. Actually he reminded me a bit of Hidetaka Yoshioka‘s character “Doc” in Godzilla Minus One. Looked it up and sure enough it’s him! Thank you internet, and IMDB, for the power to instantly solved questions!
Here is Hidetaka Yoshioka in Godzilla Minus One.

Here is Hidetaka Yoshioka, on the far right, in Rhapsody in August.

There is something magical and poetic about Hidetaka Yoshioka starring in both of these movies. Working with the master Akira Kurosawa and a leading role in one of my favorite films, Godzilla Minus One, that also deals with an atomic blast in Japan. I wonder if anyone else has asked him about the connection and how it feels? Surely someone has.
Anyway, I got excited about it and just thought I’d share. Hopefully you find it cool, too!
