I missed out on the whole Kamen Rider thing. I’m not sure it ever played in the US.

My first exposure to the long running series was the recent moder film incarnation by Hideaki Anno, ‘Shin Kamen Rider.‘ It is so bizarre, flawed, over the top, touching, depressing, messy and fun that, like all Anno’s work, I kinda just fell in love with it.

Anyway, I ran across this live video of several singers performing the opening theme music for Kamen Rider at some sort of event. Likely an award show.

I love this era of Japanese theme music. It’s so serious yet goofy. Lots of campy fun and I just wanted to share it. Enjoy!

Hoping to do a write up on ‘Shin Kamen Rider’ sometime in the near future.

  1. I watched a little bit of Kamen Rider even though my first exposure was the embarrassing Saban American adaptation in the 90s that sometimes crossed over with Power Rangers.

    1. Ha! Yeah I kinda missed the boat on Power Rangers as I think I had just gone off to the college. My kids loved them though! Apparently Kamen Rider keeps reinventing itself year after year and there are so many different versions of it. It’s massive when you do a bit of research. After watching Shin Kamen Rider, I did go back and watch some of the original series and it was pretty fun. I think the shot on film look helps out a lot as the more current versions shot on digital are hard to watch, at least for me.

      1. Fair enough. That makes sense given how old you are when Power Rangers became a thing in the West back then. I certainly watched it when I was a kid, I can’t lie. I’ve seen a bit of random Kamen Rider shows and they looked interesting although I heard some series are better than others. Good point about the stuff shot on film as opposed to digital. It’s like the visuals feel more tangible if that makes sense kind of like hand-drawn animation as opposed to CGI.
